A not-so typical Australian upbringing

What comes to mind when you think of an Aussie childhood?

Fairy bread? Beach cricket? Healthy Harrold?

For many Aussies, this wasn’t what they experienced.

Australia has people from all walks of life, which is what makes our
stories unique.

Happy Childhood

The diversity of the population is changing the way we view a typical
Aussie. Welcoming people from over 190 different counties and 300
ancestries, it has become impossible to impose a ‘cookie cutter’
Australian upbringing. With stories ranging from cultural barriers, to
the effects that come from moving to the ‘lucky’ country.

Macquarie University students, Katie and Justin, spoke to two first-
generation Aussies, to give us a snapshot into the assortment of unique
individuals that comprise our Australian story.

Matthew is an energetic and lively Chilean, who fought identity
struggles and cultural barriers upon moving to Australia at a young age.

Gilberte is a strong woman who chose to leave an unstable Lebanon in
pursuit of an alternative adult life.

These are their stories.
